Finishing off
a decorative wrap is no different than whipping a guide. Make several
turns over the chosen crossing point of the wrap. Insert a tie-off
loop and finish as you would a guide.
This is where
the second use of the soda straw is key. In doing the wrap you have
laid many layers of nylon thread over the masking tape and probably
have had to add additional wraps of masking tape to preserve a sticky
surface. Once you have overwrapped the decorative wrap put a drop
or two of color sealant on the threads and allow it to dry for 10
minutes or so just enough to provide adherence. Cut through
the soda straw with a pair of sharp scissors. Surgical suture shears
work very well for this. All the thread and all but the first layer
of masking tape will be free of the blank and the tag ends of the
wrapping thread can be clipped away cleanly without fear of losing
the decorative wrap due to movement of the anchoring thread.
The tag ends
can also be shaved away with a razor blade. This is an especially
good technique if the threads have also been given a light coating
of thread sealer. The application of thread sealer will keep fraying
to a minimum and also allow the threads to be "tapered"
so they will not show as a lump beneath the finished wrap.
