To begin the
thread pattern I use regular masking tape and make one revolution
around the blank at the grip end (top photo).
On the next
turn around the blank, I twist the tape over on itself so the sticky
side is exposed and insert a piece of soda straw under this wrap
and subsequent wraps of the tape (second photo). The soda straw
at the base of the rod and adjacent to the reel seat is the 0 degree
axis for the wrap; in other words, the side the angler will see
(third photo).
Repeat this
step at the tip end of the rod, but place the soda straw on the
180 degree axis (bottom photo). This will help you maintain the
line of thread and will also provide a constant reference point
for the cross-overs of the thread. The next photo illustrates this
layout technique.
