The
use of foam composite material affords a variety of options to the
artistic bent in any craftsman. Alternating accent colors can be
inlaid easily using standard rubber cement. The accent rings are
best done on a lathe and look best when inserted in a handle assembly
in graduated sizes with the largest at the butt section and the
smallest toward the tip section. Those of you who have some high
school wood shop experience gluing different woods together and
then turning them as a single piece of stock know that the possibilities
for designs are nearly endless: diamonds, circles, oblongs, ellipses,
or other designs.
A
foam grip is much easier to dress up than a wood or aluminium one.
"Blood grooves" or non-slip surfaces can be cut into the
grip using a triangular file. These also say "custom
made."
Putting
"blood grooves" in foam is a very simple yet quite decorative
addition to any rod handle. This is easily accomplished while the
rod is in a lathe. Simply hold a triangular file against the spinning
grip and cut in the grooves. I've found that sets of three spaced
at staggered distances from each other gives the best looking effect.
