These guides
are still in production today and are used on low-end fishing rods,
"kiddie rods," and bargain outlet "specials."
They really are not a good choice for any rod that will be seeing
serious use.
Originally they
served a unique purpose, as the wire spiral flexes with the blank,
whereas the heavier single-piece, brazed, or welded guides described
below under stainless steel
do not.
One of their
serious drawbacks is that the wire itself is usually not chromed.
Chroming would have to be done after the guide has been formed,
and flexing would open fissures along the chrome plating covering
the wire, which means that the relatively soft wire would be exposed
to the elements. These guides are also now available in a black
"powder painted" version which is better but still will
groove over time.
