These guides
were first introduced in the late 60s but did not become popular
until they were mass marketed by Fuji. Millions of these guides
were sold and still are being sold. However, sales today
are mainly for use in the repair of some of those original millions
of guides.
The guides are
always seated in a plastic "shock ring." The most popular
were the black guides with green shock rings, some of which were
treated to glow in the dark. The second most popular were the chrome
guides with white shock ring and black inner ceramic oxide ring.
Ceramic oxide
guides are very good general purpose guides. Their drawback is that
plastic shock ring. The plastic ring is force-fit into a stamped
steel ring that seats in a stamped metal frame for the guide feet.
The ceramic oxide center ring is then forced into the plastic shock
ring. Over time, or under severe stress or heat, the plastic
ring will pop out of the frame due to lengthy exposure to ultraviolet
rays or simple expansion and contraction. Also, while the ceramic
ring is quite slippery, it is also brittle.
