Refurbishing Bamboo Rods (Step 1)

The Ken Preston Logo

The first step in any refinishing project is to remove as much surface dirt and grime as possible. There are several sources of silicon impregnated "polishing cloths" that you can try, as well as soap and warm water.

Once the majority of the grime has been removed, the next step is to remove any old varnish or "alligatored" finish caused by heat. This can be done by gently dragging a single edged razor blade or sharp mat cutter BACKWARDS across the rod surface, taking care not to round over the sharp ridges at the intersections of the cane pieces. Remember the objective is to remove the finish and not the outer "power fibers" of the cane.
